Brit plumber to visit ISS | The Register: "They will shortly be favoured by a visit from a British plumber who, according to a recommendation from one of Sharipov's mates down the pub, will 'do the job for cash if you don't fancy paying the VAT'."

Told you UK Plumbers get paid loads.
Travel expenses would have to be scrutinized.

Office 2003: one year on | The Register: "According to Microsoft, Office 2003 is ahead of XP after one year in every segment it tracks. Office revenue grew 17 per cent in financial year 2003 to $10.8bn. SharePoint Portal Server is the firm's fastest growing product, with 30m licencees."

SC Magazine: "Mobile virus infects Lexus cars
by David Quainton

Lexus cars may be vulnerable to viruses that infect them via mobile phones. Landcruiser 100 models LX470 and LS430 have been discovered with infected operating systems that transfer within a range of 15 feet. "
I could become a Minister with this handy
Ministry in a Box.
Certified and everything, and what with the exchange rate being so low, it's under £20!
What a fab idea ... not!
Stumbling back to school.
This is all true.
I decided to do some work last night in the bedsit. Some wep password design, and I put on my laptop NetStumbler, a handy dandy program that scans the airwaves for Access Points to connect to.
Being in the city of an evening I did not think much of how many I could see, but I was surprised to find a number of Access Points open.

All the signals were poor, but netstumbler connected to one and gave me an ip address. Firstly I thought it was the little office down the road, after hours, no one in.
Looking at the DNS, I found it was the local school, and using my network places saw 5 computers all with shares, 3 printers.
I'm not going to tell you the local school's name for fear or abuse.
This morning I phoned to school to warn of the security breach, and talked to the head teacher about it.
She was friendly - but seemed a little naive. When I said anyone with a wireless device (laptop and wireless adapter I said to her), could sit outside the school grounds and hack in, she started to get a bit concerned.
I said "If I can do it then a paedophile can".
She replied saying she'd get onto it, and if I needed my help could she?
I gave her my number.
Now ... get this. I scanned the area and found 5 access points, one the school, the other 4 I presume local houses. I don't know how knowledgable these people are, but I bet they can see the schools access points.
I'm now either waiting for their technicians to call me, or the police to turn up at work and haul me away.
Anyway, I'm awaiting some response. I'm not going to try and connect again unless I'm invited to test the security.
If I had my kids at that school, I'd want the school details secure, not available to any idiot with a laptop.
Never had this problem when I was a kid, mind you computers were not standard issue then, and paper only flies through the air when it's folded correctly.
I'm sure I've done the right thing and told them.
You think?

"Congratulations on ordering your Demon Broadband Service.
What happens next?

You will be contacted, via email, by our ADSL Provisioning team within 10 working days as your order progresses through our provisioning process. We hope that you will be totally satisfied with your choice of the Demon Express Service. Very soon you could be enjoying all of the benefits associated with Broadband Internet access. "

I cannot believe I've just done it, taken the plunge.
Only a 512k line unlimited access But that's for starters, we'll see how it goes. All I need do now is inform Wannadoo that I want to drop the £14.99 dialup account. I've been with Wannadoo for years (when they were first Freeserve), Demon have been around for years, mainly for business use.
Oooo, I can't wait. Gear up the computer for downloading so uch over the week all ready for me at the weekend.
I could have gone for the fixed IP addresses, but I will at a later date, when the DarkCompass Home infrastructure is finalised.
This will be some time because of little Raine is due in the next week or so, so that will take up my time.

Following the Absolutely Nothing Ebay entry - that has now been pulled, this guys is selling his forehead as advertising space here.
Only a couple of days to go before this great offer ends.
Damn.
Blogger broke my xml feed.
No enclosures made from the blogger atom xml feed. So I am working on the look and feel of the blog at livejournal. I might well be moving there. So for the time being the podcast feed is now pointing to the livejournal blog - enclosures work, so I must apologise to the people who didn't get my podcast from yesterday in time, I posted it, but the xml did not work. It's now behaving itself.
Only time will tell.
Podcast Paul and I are thinking of getting a little UK conference together for the UK podcasting masses.
If any other UK podcasters are interested please drop me or Paul a line expressing an interest.
So I move to Live Journal?

Now why didn't I think of that? No, only kidding.
Ancient rights of way to be protected from '4x4s': "He said that it was not right that 4x4 vehicles, for example, should be allowed to use a pathway just because horse drawn vehicles once used the route. "

Why not? I'm sure he just thinks that 4x4's are driven by stressed housewives on a school run. Just because he doesn't have one!
Beer fights cancer: official | The Register
Scientists at Okayama University in Japan have rather agreeably discovered that unidentified compounds in lager and stout may help to prevent DNA damage leading to cancer.

Whoo hoo. Oh, non-alcoholic mouse beer.....

Playing with Skype
I've used skype previously, but moving on with it with a vengence. You can guess my Caller Id, and if you want to skype me please feel free.
However, SkypeOut - you have to have a credit card. Now as you all know I'm not one for credit cards. Waiting on them to use paypal. Plan at home is once on broadband the home phone will drop to an answer machine on the computer. All calls are then filtered, and calls are then made from Skypeout. going to push the family onto skype too. That'll keep the money grabbing papercrats at BT at bay.
Fixed
Now only one Blog to feed.
Dropped the isilo Download page, and my Downloads page. Not sure how many people were using it but hey. I know that people are still using both Palm and Psion pages, and I'll be updating these pages soon. I'l have some time when the sprog is born to move things around again, back to the wannadoo webspace.
I'll be moving to broadband (by March methinks), any suggestions as to provider please drop me a comment, email the usual address.
Updated Website and moved it to blogspot so that the atom feed will work for feedburner.
www.darkcompass.com has been redirected to blogspot. The only disadvantage of this is the bloody blogger toolbar at the top. but this stops the hideous pop up from go.to.
You win some you lose some.
I'm dropping the live journal blog, and I'll be updating the feedburner link to this one.
Anyone linking to live journal for the RSS I'd suggest moving it to the links (now on right).
Let me know what you think, there's also comment at bottom of each posting.

Dark Compass PodCast 10

Live Journal is out of commission, but the mp3 file can be obtained from above.
Notes are going to be updated as soon as livejournal is up and running. Not sure when this is, but it's been out for two days now. I bet that's pissing off a few people.

I'm thinking of moving this page to blogspot to get bloggers rss feed working, as this is hosted elsewhere, and the atom xml file does not seem to work properly using blogger. This might relieve my two blog entries. however, this does help me, splitting one for podcasts and another (this one) for other things as well, Like Adam Curry.

Finished Dave Gorman's Googlewhack Adventure, if you like british humour, and travel to countries for no reason other than obsession, you'll love it.

Thursday, January 13, 2005

Touched down in the UK, after almost 24 hours of travel. The 5 hour drive, actually was 3.5 hours, and do I spent 6 hours at Mumbae Airport. Gave me chance to finish the Dave Gorman book (well at least I did not go down the same path as I did before, and drive off to somewhere with strangers).
Knackered. A good nights sleep and I'll do a podcast tomorrow for the weekend.
